Served 6 months Philadelphia City Militia.

Became sexton and official bell ringer at the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall).

On Monday, July 8, 1776 Hurrie's constant ringing along with others, summoned a large crowd to the State House lawn to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
