While Pennsylvania Hospital is a living, contemporary institution, it has retained tangible evidence of its past wherever possible. In its newest buildigns, elements from structures now gone are incorporated as design features.

This cupola is the last remaining symbol of the Memorial pavilions opened in 1894. At that time, they represented the first major building program since the completion of the Pine Street Hospital almost ninety years earlier.

This cupola sat atop the middle Memorial Pavilion as seen in the accompanying engraving. Similar cupolas adorned the several sections. The east and west structures were demolished in building programs of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The final center section, only two-thirds of its original size by 1982, was removed to make way for the new Cathcart Building opened in 1983.
