1. On This Site Marker

Inscription. Between 1851-52, this west leg of the East Wing was demolished and rebuilt seven feet wider than the original structure. It is assumed that the need for the wider width had been recognized at an early date, for when the West Wing was constructed in 1797 the wider width was part of the plan. Following the opening of the Center Building in 1804, increased traffic through this leg probably made the rebuilding more of a necessity.
