1. Texas Longhorn Marker

Inscription. The Texas Longhorn is a sturdy hybrid breed resulting from a random mixing of Spanish retinto stock and English cattle brought to Texas in the 1820s and 1830s by Anglo-American frontiersmen. Longhorns with their long legs, hard hoofs, and little need for water, ability to swim rivers and survive the weather extremes were ideal trail cattle.

During the first half of the 1800's, Texas longhorns were trailed to markets in Missouri and beyond. Through the 1880's contractors drove five to ten million cattle out of Texas, reviving the state's economy devastated by the Civil War.

The Texas Longhorn is an American breed of beef cattle, characterized by its long horns, which can span more than 8 ft (2.4 m) from tip to tip. It derives from cattle brought from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas by Spanish conquistadores from the time of the Second Voyage of Christopher Columbus until about 1512. For hundreds of years the cattle lived a semi-feral existence on the rangelands; they have a higher tolerance of heat and drought than most European breeds.
