Casselberry in Seminole County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Belgian Azalea Gardens
Azalea growers Jules and Janis Colle heard about Casselberrys system of delivering oil from the railroad to the ferneries to prevent the freezing of the fern crops. This interested them as they had been looking for the perfect place to grow their Belgian azaleas. In 1939 they came to Casselberry and founded Belgian Azaleas Inc. with Hibbard Casselberry, beginning not only a business but a promotional tool for the town. Visitors to Casselberry were invited to visit the azalea gardens and brochures promoted the town as the Azalea Town. Hibbard Casselberry gave away azaleas to new homeowners, which can still be seen in yards today.
