Inscription. Tennessee was propelled upward 435 500 million years ago, exposing marine sediments. Erosion produced numerous cave systems, sinkholes, and collapse structures that contain some of the world's most important zinc deposits. The sea invaded again, at the same time that the Smoky Mountains were being formed. Middle Tennessee was covered in ash from volcanoes in North Carolina and Virginia.
