1. Grand Army of the Republic.
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, and grew to include hundreds of "posts" (local community units) across the North and West. It was dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member.(Submitted on January 25, 2023, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
2. Grand Army of the Republic in Ohio.
The GAR was very strong in Ohio. The state encampments attracted thousands of veterans and their supporters. Numerous GAR retirement homes existed in the state. The GAR continued to operate until 1956, when the final member died at the age of 109. The last national encampment had occurred seven years earlier in 1949. The Grand Army of the Republic was responsible for making Memorial Day a national holiday.(Submitted on January 25, 2023, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
