A National Treasure
Poitou donkeys are one of the oldest breeds of donkeys. They come from the Poitou region of France where they are considered a national treasure. Poitou are known for their long, corded coat. A large docile breed, they are primarily used for breeding mules. The word Baudet in their name means, "sire of mules." The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy lists the Poitou donkey as critical. Their numbers dropped to less than 50 in the 1970s. Now there are only about 450 animals worldwide.
