Formerly the Columbus Avenue Playground, this site was renamed July 20, 1920, for Sgt. William Edward Carter, who served forty years with distinction for God and Country.
Sgt. Carter enlisted in the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia on September 20, 1878, served in the Spanish-American War, and later in WWI with "L" Company, 372nd Infantry. He died October 18, 1918 near Ban-de-Laveline, France. His name is commemorated by Boston's first American Legion Post, The William E. Carter Post #16.
