1. Herb Pennock Park - A History Marker
Inscription.
In 1971, Mr. John W. Manfredi approached the Kennett
Borough Council about building a baseball field on what
was a landfill in Kennett. He received approval and work
began in the summer of 1971. Later that summer, Mr.
Manfredi and his friends from the Italian American club and
Hewlett Packard started with 2 teams and played 5-6 games.
The following year, a league of 8 teams was formed. This
league turned into the Sam Tavoni Slow Pitch Softball
League. The league still plays today under the direction of
the Kennett Area Park and Recreation Board. The land Mr.
Manfredi and his friends turned into a baseball field has
evolved into Herb Pennock Park.

The park is named after Herbert Jeffries Pennock.
Herb Pennock (Feb. 10, 1894 -Jan. 30, 1948) was born in
Kennett Square, PA and was a professional baseball pitcher.
He played major league baseball from 1912 through 1934.
Pennock played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1912-15); the
Boston Red Sox (1915-17, 1919-22, 1934); and the New York
Yankees (1923-33). As a pitcher, Mr. Pennock had 241 career
victories and was a 5-time World Series champion. He is a
member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
