Inscription. Charmain S. Chapman was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She came to St. Louis as the first Black as well as the first woman CEO of the United Way. Under her leadership, the organization raised $63.3 million in the 2000 Campaign representing the largest amount raised in its 78-year history.
