Lobau Barracks - mass executions during the Semaine Sanglante (“Bloody Week”) - May 1871

A court martial intended to quickly judge communards or those suspected of being such was held from May 24 to 29, 1871 at the Théatre du Châtelet. Condemned inmates were sent to the Lobau Barracks. As soon as they arrived there, they were summarily shot. The executions lasted without interruption for five days. Estimates of the number of people executed range from 2,000 to 3,000 people. The bodies were quickly buried in nearby squares closed to the public.
