The Medicine Shop
Established 1898
— Boyne City's Historical Past —
Before the era of the drug store, most folks relied on the patent medicine industry to cure the grevous ills of mankind. A popular medicine of the day was Thedford's Black Drought which claimed to cure everything from bad blood to headaches.
In 1896, a medicine shop opened at this location. In 1905 it was purchased as a joint venture by W.A. Hyslop, Kennard Gerne and Dr. W.H. Marshall. In 1906 they erected a fine new building at this location and the store became known as "Hysop's Drugs". In 1910 they installed the world's most modern soda fountain.
In 1923 Mr. Gerrie bought out his two partners and the store name was changed to "Central Drug". It remained unchanged until 1940 when Mr. Gerrie sold his business to his two sons, Robert and Revo. The name then changed to Gerrie's Drug and Jewelry Store.
