1. At The Rollway Marker

Inscription. "Timber!” cried the sawyers as saws and axes brought giant pines crashing to the ground. Teams of horses moved the logs to nearby riverbanks to be stacked into huge piles at the rollways. At the rollway, the company scaler would measure each log and swing his marking hammer, branding each cut end. Each camp was to have its cut banked at the rollway and ready to hit the stream when spring thaws arrived.

Winters with very little snow could lead to financial disaster. Without snow, logs could not be moved to the banking grounds and without high water in the spring logs could not be floated to the mills.
