Sanctuary of Christ the King
This huge monument, undoubtedly one of the most representatives of Silao is one of the most visited religious sites in Mexico, with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year coming to worship the image of Christ the King, also called "of the mountain".

The monument was built on land that belonged to the former Hacienda de Chichimequillas owned by José Natividad Macías Castorena, a Carranza's politician who donated it in 1920, but the initiative came from the then Bishop of León,

Don Emeterio Valverde y Téllez. However, the work was interrupted by the outbreak of the Cristero rebellion and the building already built was dynamited in 1928.

After the gun battle in 1937 Bishop Valverde y Téllez began the reconstruction of the sanctuary. The project was made by architect Nicolás Mariscal, who designed it in 1942. The work began in 1944 and was completed on December 11th, 1950.

The statue overlooking the Shrine is 20 meters tall and weighs over 250 tons of concrete and bronze. It was made by sculptor Fidias Elizondo, in Mexico City. It was started in December 1945 and was completed in August 1949.

The base of the statue is made of a huge concrete basilica, hemisphere-shaped symbolizing the universe, in addition to the statue of Christ the King it has two statues of angels offering two crowns symbolizing martyrdom and glory. The whole is supported by eight columns of concrete symbolizing the eight religious provinces that existed in the country in mid-XX century.

Each year, the sanctuary is home to one of the most beloved celebrations, not only for the inhabitants of Silao but for many parts of the country: the feast of Christ the King, on November 21st.
