Stroudsburg in Monroe County, Pennsylvania — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
"Little Bethel" AME Church
In 1868 the "Little Bethel" AME Church was built as a permanent place of worship for free yet segregated Native and Black Americans. Here they worshiped "Almighty God." The diverse congregation included Monroe County's Veterans of the United States "Colored Troops" (USCT) of the Civil War. Mustered from Camp William Penn, Pennsylvania's 3rd USCT sieged forts in South Carolina with the famed 55th Massachusetts Infantry; Pennsylvania's 8th USCT fought at the Battle of Olustee, Florida with the 54th Massachusetts, and one became a POW at Andersonville, Georgia. The 22nd USCT even pursued President Lincoln's assassin and led his funeral procession.
Monroe County commemorates our men for their service and sacrifice to this country.

5. "Little Bethel" AME Church Marker
I, Shari Renee Chambers, successfully fought to have my ancestors U.S. Colored Troop commemorative plaque erected 23july16! Held ceremony with family and appearing in photo Wash., DC Deputy Director of Veterans Affairs Earl Newsome. Monroe County VA Dirwctor Joel Kellers research made it easy for me to compose the verbiage of the commemorative plaque. I am NOT affiliated with SLBHA and they've misconstrued our history and disavowed our lineage! I erected the plaque, they were not involved at all! They're my successors, We are the surviving congregants, I am the youngest living and mother Joan D.Amhurst Chambers, Vivian Amhurst and Carl Anthony Capone are the elders living-2023. None of SLBHA are related to any of the historical members of Little Bethel! I am correcting these UNTRUTHS! Call me: 570-202-2722 or [email protected] email me for our true history!
