1. First Methodist Church Marker
Inscription.
Methodist Episcopal meetings were first held in farmhouses in 1836. Church was built at 621 4th Street in 1839. First resident pastor 1844, with parsonage at 214 Commerce Street. Sunday school organized 1845. Church became Methodist Episcopal, South, 1845. Present building begun 1849, dedicated 1851. Was occupied by federal troops 1864, and remodeled 1883. Adjoining parsonage built 1865, remodeled 1945 and 1964. Church became First Methodist 1939.

The Battle of Glasgow was fought on October 15, 1864, in and near Glasgow, Missouri, as part of Price's Missouri Expedition during the American Civil War. The battle resulted in the capture of needed weapons and improved Confederate morale, which had been dented after a defeat in the Battle of Pilot Knob.

Bitterness between northern and southern Methodists had intensified in the years leading to Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 and then through the carnage of the Civil War.
