Inscription. Alabama state government collapsed with the end of the Civil War in 1865. US President Andrew Johnson established a provisional government with a constitution repealing secession and abolishing slavery. In 1867 “Radical” Republicans in Congress passed the Reconstruction Acts, which rejected Johnson's efforts and instituted military rule in most of the southern states. Another constitution was written that disenfranchised former Confederates and gave voting rights to African-American males.

In 1868, a local Ku Klux Klan group was organized. Their goals were to obstruct Reconstruction and the reorganization of The University of Alabama. Through voter intimidation and disenfranchisement, violence, and the return of voting rights to former Confederates, Democrats returned to political office in 1874. The doctrine of “white supremacy” was reestablished and held sway for nearly another century.
