Reconstruction:1867-1874
City of Tuscaloosa
In 1868, a local Ku Klux Klan group was organized. Their goals were to obstruct Reconstruction and the reorganization of The University of Alabama. Through voter intimidation and disenfranchisement, violence, and the return of voting rights to former Confederates, Democrats returned to political office in 1874. The doctrine of “white supremacy” was reestablished and held sway for nearly another century.
