1. Brick Pavers Marker
Inscription. The first road to be paved in Greenville was a downtown section of Lafayette Street. In preparation, the road was plowed and the surface, mostly gravel put down to stabilize the native sand, was removed. The road was crowned in the center, sloping gently toward the sidewalks. Once cleared, a thick cement foundation was put down, followed by a layer of sand, then brick pavers, followed by more cement to fill the cracks. Each of the pavers weighed a hefty 10lbs and the construction process drew crowds of interested onlookers. Today, the brick walkway through the museum garden is made of pavers from Greenville's original paved streets.
