Inscription. Upon completion of Old Swedes, the church bell was being hung in a tree on the north side of the church. Those living across the river and to the south complained they could not hear the bell, so a wooden scaffold was erected on the south side toward the river. Finally, in 1802, Thomas Cole, a church member from Cavan County Ireland, supervised the design and building of the distinctive bell tower. He signed his work, "T S Cole," with wrought iron letters located high on the bell tower's south side.
