Hier lagen vroeger de Kwakerspoel en het Kwakerseiland. De Kwakerspoel was een groot meer dat zich uitstrekte van de Singelgracht tot aan de tegenwoordige Bilderdijkstraat. Aan de noordzijde werd dit water begrensd door de Kwakersdijk, tegenwoordig de Potgieterstraat en het Kwakersplein. Zijn naam ontleent het Kwakerseiland waarschijnlijk aan de kwakel, een hoge smalle brug waarmee het eiland ooit met het vasteland verbonden was.

The Kwakerspoel and Kwakerseiland used to be here. The Kwakerspoel was a large lake that stretched from the Singelgracht to the present Bilderdijkstraat. On the north side, this water was bordered by the Kwakersdijk, nowadays the Potgieterstraat and the Kwakersplein. Kwakerseiland probably derives its name from the “kwakel”, a high narrow bridge that once connected the island to the mainland.
