Portal Galeana

"Galeana" Portal
(Former The Ice Cream Parlor Portal)
The origin of the portal goes back to the follow-up that 16th century builders gave to the recommendations expressed in The Ordinances ("Las Odenanzas") issued by Phillip II with respect to the outline of cities in Hispanic America, one of which mentioned that "the entire square and all the surroundings, and the four main streets emerging from it, should have portals, because they are of much comfort for the dealers who usually concur here..."

The portals conform ensemble an ensemble of semipublic spaces, which are the location, as provided since Vice- Regal times, for trade for the comfort of sellers and buyers. Despite the fact that, in the course of time, the trade activity began to be distributed among the different neighborhood squares, the portals have kept their hierarchy as containers of important buildings of Historical Center.

Previously, this portal was called of the Ice cream parlor, at present it bears the name of the insurgent Hermenegildo Galeana, an agriculturist an who was born in the state of Guerrero, who joined Morelos in 1810 an fought for the Independence of Mexico, and died in combat for the cause in 1814.

This portal is conformed by five patrimonial buildings constructed during the 18th century, whose original uses were those of residences several of them with adaptations of Neo-Classical of the 19th century.
