Inscription. Warren Hoffman, 3 year-old of Oakland, Jennifer Han-Chi Lin, 14 year-old of Castro Valley, and Christopher Jones, 17 year-old from Oakland, represent all children who died by violence under the age of 18.

Throughout America, tragic acts of violence against children are occurring with increasing frequency and senselessness, destroying innocent lives and devastating families and communities.

In 1996, Alameda County and the East Bay Regional Park District dedicated a Children’s Memorial Grove with the planting of young oak trees to remember all Alameda County children who lost their lives to violence, so they will never be forgotten.

In April 2001, U.S. Congress adopted the Children’s Memorial Flag and a resolution introduced by Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA) dedicating the fourth Friday of April as “National Children’s Memorial Day”. The memorial flag, which was designed by Leah Patty, age 16 from San Leandro, has been distributed nationwide by the Child Welfare League of America.

This statue is now dedicated to all children who die from maltreatment and violence each year signaling our determination to end this needless loss.
