Technologies developed for Apollo led to advancements in the commercial sector. For example, fire-resistant textiles used for spacesuits are now used for firefighting, military purposes and motorsports. A water purification system used aboard Apollo spacecraft is now used for water supply systems and cooling towers to kill bacteria, viruses and algae.
NASA plans to return humans to the Moon and then land them on Mars. The new spacecraft, Orion. is similar to the Apollo Command Module. It is shaped like Apollo, although it is slightly larger, measuring 16.5 feet wide and 11 feet tall, and capable or holding four astronauts In a 692-cubic-foot cabin. Solar arrays on Orion generate power and allow for longer missions.
