1. Frances Perkins Marker
Inscription. Perkins, US Secretary of Labor 1933-45, was the first woman appointed to the US Cabinet. A pivotal moment in her career was witnessing the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City. Determined to protect workers, she helped craft laws safeguarding workers, children and unions. She wrote New Deal legislation that established the first minimum wage and overtime laws in the US. Her most important contribution came in 1934 as Chair of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Committee on Economic Security. In this post, she was instrumental in the passage of the 1935 Social Security Act.

As Secretary of Labor, Perkins played a role in the New Deal by helping to write legislation.
