Inscription. Dr. Samuel A. Canaan Jr. was born in St. Louis and is a graduate of Sumner High School and the University of Iowa. He furthered his education in the field of ophthalmology by graduating from Meharry University, and completing his internship and first residency at Homer G. Phillips Hospital. Canaan was the first African American to serve as a retinal surgeon in St. Louis.
