Casa Broggi was constructed between 1888 and 1889 by Luigi Broggi who owned the site and produced the design, perhaps in collaboration

with a young Giuseppe Sommaruga. Set at the junction of two major thoroughfares, Via Meravigli and Via Dante, the building presents spectacular eclectic facades. The rusticated basement, comprising a ground floor with shops and a mezzanine, is in Ceppo stone and has arches and ornamentation in relief. The next two floors are clad with Arzo marble and have elegant framed windows. Special attention was paid to the attic storey, designed with a French- style mansard roof and adorned with sculpted heads, scrolls and mosaic panels. The corner and end fronts are distinguished by a wealth of architectural features - sculpted male figures or telamons, balconies, columns, tripartite windows and pediments - that afford the building a monumental impact previously unseen in 19th-century middle- class dwellings.

Overview: Casa Broggi is a monumental building located at the intersections of Via Dante, Via Meravigli, and Via Santa Maria Segreta, at the northwest end of Piazza Cordusio. The polygonal palace has facades on the three streets mentioned above with the most scenic being the narrow edge on Via Meravigli. The structure was built for multiple use, with ground floor shops and residential apartments on the higher floors. The site had once housed the church of San Nazaro in Pietrasanta, which had been demolished in the late 19th century.
