Inscription.
When Clarence Cutler was born in Newton, there were no cars, airplanes, movies, radios, recorded music, or Red Sox. Telephones and electric lights were new and only for the very, very rich.

But by 1910, when he spoke as valedictorian about the exciting and challenging opportunities awaiting his classmates at Medfield High School, all these modern conveniences were becoming common, and he'd become hooked on the Red Sox.

In 1917, when the United States entered World War I, he enlisted in the Army's new Air Corps; his job became training new pilots, many of whom saw action on the Western Front.

Lt. Cutler loved flying. He stayed in the service after the war ended and logged over 3,000 flying hours, but in January 1921 he was killed when his DeHaviland DH-4 crashed near Irlich, Germany, close to the Rhine River.

Funeral services for Clarence were held first in Europe and then at Town Hall, followed by burial, with full military honors, in Vine Lake Cemetery.
