Year of the Gorilla
The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) has declared 2009 the International Year of the Gorilla. The severity of the problems threatening gorillas are so serious that WAZA has initiated this major awareness campaign, focusing on education and fund raising to support gorilla field conservation projects.
A Plan to Help Gorillas
The 2008 Agreement on the Conservation of Gorillas and their Habitats is a unique international plan to consolidate all gorilla conservation efforts. It focuses on high-priority projects for the long-term survival of gorillas, their habitats and neighboring peoples.
Key activities of this plan are:
• Anti-poaching campaigns
• Reforestation efforts
• Development of sustainability eco-tourism
• Community development projects in areas bordering protected areas for gorillas
• Programs to re-introduce orphaned gorillas into the wild
The Saint Louis Zoo is Helping Gorillas
Throughout the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, we provide financial and logistical support to The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI) and Conservation Through Public Health. These are just two of the many conservation organizations working effectively to save gorillas from extinction.
Gorillas in our Future?
Although national and international laws exist to protect gorillas, they can be difficult to enforce. If the current steep declines continue, gorillas could become extinct within this century.
