Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Nest of the Bald Eagle
Bald eagles nest in swamps and other wetland areas in summer. A mated pair often returns to the same nest year after year, enlarging it over time. When the eagles leave the nest, other birds move in.
Just 20 years ago, no bald eagles nested in Missouri. They had disappeared along with their favorite nesting habitats, cypress swamps. With the restoration of Missouri swamps and other conservation efforts, nesting bald eagles returned to our state in the early 1980s. Their numbers have been increasing ever since.
