1. Engelmann and the Garden Marker
Inscription. Dr. George Engelmann immigrated to St. Louis from Germany in the 1830s. He was a noted botanist and advisor to Henry Shaw, the Garden's founder. He encouraged Shaw to develop his gardens to be of scientific use. Engelmann was instrumental in describing the flora of western North America and described 108 species of cacti, over ⅔ of the forms recognized today. Upon his death, Engelmann bequeathed his entire herbarium collection, containing over 95,000 specimens, to the Garden.
