Inscription.
Victoria water lilies have always had a special place here at the Garden. Henry Shaw hired James Gurney as head gardener in 1867. Gurney was famous for his successful cultivation of Victorian water lilies at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He cultivated the first Victoria to bloom at the Garden. Today, the Garden displays Victoria water lilies in the reflecting pools in front of the Climatron.

Did you know? The rib structure inspired Joseph Paxton's design for the Crystal Palace.
