Inscription. Victory is the Roman goddess of success in all things and victory in war. Note here her sword is set aside so she is not depicted in war. The inscription reads: "The Victory of Science Over Ignorance. Ignorance is the curse of God, knowledge is the wing wherewith we fly to heaven." Victory is an exact copy of a statue by Vincenzo Consani (1818-1887) and was handpicked by Henry Shaw for the Garden. She arrived in St. Louis in 1886, and was installed in the "Temple of Victory" in 1887.
