SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant (Nurse Corps) Kathleen R. Dial, United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a Flight Nurse with the FIFTH Air Force, in the Southwest Pacific on 10 June 1944. Lieutenant Dial broke her hip, dislocated her shoulder, and suffered a concussion, when her aircraft crashed onto a New Guinea beach. Despite the injuries she directed the off-loading of patients until she collapsed.
