Inscription. The dawn redwood is one of the most intriguing botanical discoveries of the 20th century. Fossil records date them back 50 million years, and they were thought to be extinct. An expedition in 1948 collected seeds, and seedlings were distributed to various botanical institutions worldwide for growth trials, including the Missouri Botanical Garden. About 5,000 trees survive in and near the valley in China where the first living trees were encountered. However, the dawn redwood remains critically endangered in the wild.

Erected by Missouri Botanical Garden.
