First Roman Catholic Seminary founded in the United States
Many notable men have called themselves sons of St. Mary's, among them leaders of church affairs and civil society. Since opening in 1791 over 7,000 of the seminary's students have been ordained to the priesthood, including over 100 bishops. Alumni of St. Mary's College (1799-1852) distinguished themselves in law, politics, business, education, the arts, and philanthropic causes.
