Sergeant Alfred B. Hilton Memorial
On April 6, 1865, Sgt. Alfred 8 Hilton was posthumously honored by the United States War Department with the MOH for gallantry in action as color bearer, with a citation that reads, When the regimental color bearer fell, this soldier seized the color and carried it forward, together with the national standard until disabled at the enemy's inner line,
Of the 1,522 MOHS awarded for service between 1861 and 1865, Sgt Hilton is one of only sixteen Black soldiers of the Civil War army to be so honored. To this day Sergeant Alfred B. Hilton remains the only Harford County native to receive the United States Military's highest honor for military valor,
