Inscription.
Named in honor of
James Wesley Silver
(1907-88)
History professor (1936-64)
“He changed my life,” wrote a distinguished alumnus of this intellectually stimulating teacher, department chair (1946-57), president of Southern Historical Ass'n (1963-64). Author of the best-selling “Mississippi: The Closed Society” (1964), Dr. Silver indicted repression in his adopted state. A defender of free speech, academic freedom and progressive values, he was reviled by many White segregationists in the state. Under pressure he left the university in 1964 and taught at the University of Notre Dame and University of South Florida. Southeast of this site stood Faculty House 6, long-time home of the Silver family.

Erected by University of Mississippi.
