Porter L. Fortune, Jr. Cultural Center
The University of Mississippi
Inscription.
Porter L. Fortune, Jr. served as Chancellor of the University of Mississippi from February 1969 through March 1984. With colleagues he conceived the idea of the cultural center at Ole Miss and worked throughout his administration to make the cultural center dream a reality.
The cultural center is more than a complex of concrete and steel it is a concept of spirit molded by dedicated men and women through buildings, programs, and the land which gave birth to our culture. In the magnificent natural setting of the university, which now includes the very spot where the greatest literary figure of our century lived, dreamed, and created, it is unthinkable that wise planning would not include preservation of our rich cultural heritage.
