1. Martyn Mission Marker

Inscription. The Martyn Mission was established here in 1825 by the Presbyterian Church as a mission to the Chickasaw. The mission included a school under the direction of Rev. William Blair (1791-1873) and his wife Susan, who taught about thirty students. After Blair departed, the post was served by Rev. James Holmes. The Martyn Mission closed in 1833 and with the Chickasaw Cession of 1836, the property was sold to John McKennon. The mission is considered the first organized school in what would be Marshall County.
