Regarding Dr. B.M. Brooks House. Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
the house is significant for its association with Dr. Brooks, a well-known physician in Decatur County, Tennessee for thirty-six years. From the time Dr. Brooks moved into the house in 1900 until his death in 1929, the building served as his office, clinic, and pharmacy. He ministered to hundreds of families within Decatur, Wayne and Perry counties and was one person on whom the community frequently depended. Brooks graduated from the Memphis Hospital Medical College in March of 1893 and began his medical practice at a time when physicians were called upon to take care of the sick, act as dentists, and dispense drugs. The medicines and instruments he carried with him for fighting death and disease fit easily into two small saddlebags slung across the back of his horse. Dr. Brooks made the rounds of his patients for thirty-one years before consenting to buy a car in 1924. Even then he was forced to use a horse when muddy roads made it impossible to take his Ford Model T touring car on rounds.
