Inscription. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has been conducting archaeological excavations at this location for more than a decade, with the discovery of the remains of a major multi-roomed structure from the Second Temple period (late 1st century BCE - 70 CE), as well as structures from the Byzantine and Islamic periods. On the north side of the site is a medieval fortification with a gate and dry ditch in front of it (11th-13th centuries CE). It was superseded by the Ottoman Old City wall of the 16th century.
