1. Clocktower Building Marker
Inscription. Erected 1908
George Sellon, State Architect in collaboration with
Dr. Leonard Stocking, Hospital Superintendent (1904-1931)

The Clocktower’s prominence as the terminus of Palm Drive conveyed the importance of treatment at the new hospital. With its arched windows, clay tile roof, buttressed walls and textured stucco exterior, this Mediterranean Revival style landmark was visible from both the hospital grounds and the surrounding community.

Centered among the treatment and residential buildings, the Clocktower housed a receiving room for patients, a reception room for visitors, laboratories, treatment rooms, and offices. The Clocktower’s laboratory and therapy facilities played a central role in Dr. Leonard Stocking’s belief that a hospital should treat rather than simply confine patients. The treatment techniques administered here, such as hydrotherapy and electro-shock therapy, were among the most advanced for their time. The Agnews State Hospital historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

1. Looking Back: Agnews State Hospital. San Jose Public Library
"The hospital is most famously known as the site of the greatest loss of life in Santa Clara County after the 1906 earthquake. Eleven officials and over one-hundred patients were crushed when the main treatment building collapsed. But the history of Agnews is more interesting than this grim memory."

2. Agnews Insane Asylum. National Park Service
"The treatment of the insane in California dates from the earliest days of the Gold Rush. The first provisions for the insane were to lock them up with criminals in the ship Ephemia, purchased in 1849 by the City of San Francisco, and later to house them at the San Francisco marine hospital in 1850, used primarily for ailing seamen. In 1885 the Agnews Residential Facility was established by the California State Legislature as a neuropsychiatric institution for the care and treatment of the mentally ill."
