Inscription. Matthew seemed an unlikely person for Jesus to select as an apostle. He was a tax collector and an agent of the Roman Government. The members of this profession, well renowned for their greed, were disliked and shunned by the Jewish people. Yet Jesus invited Matthew to follow Him, and Matthew just left work and followed. When criticized for attending a banquet of Matthew’s associates, Jesus responded, “I have not come to call the just, but sinners.” Matthew is represented by the symbol of an angel, the inspiration for his gospel writing.
