Waterford in New London County, Connecticut — The American Northeast (New England)
Italian (West) Garden
Designed in 1922, by Beatrix Farrand, this garden design replaced plantings originally designed by Wayne Stiles from the firm of Brett and Hall. Using the existing bed layout, Mrs Farrand used her expertise in plant material to fashion drifts of perennials and annuals, accented by evergreen shrubs and vines. Her color scheme here was said to reflect the colors of an Italian sunset-yellows, golds, burnt orange, maroons, purples, dark blues and white. In the days of the Harkness residency, the views looked out to Long Island Sound to the south and the west. James Gamble Rogers designed the pergola situated at the north end of the garden, it was also known as Mrs. Harkness' Tea House and was an anniversary gift from Edward.
