After graduating high school, Wally Schirra enrolled in (what is now) NJIT. Schirra was inspired, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, to apply for the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated with a B.S. in aeronautical engineering after three years. Commissioned as a U.S. Navy ensign and trained as a fighter pilot, Schirra flew more than 90 combat missions in the Korean War before being chosen as one of the original seven American astronauts. He was the only person to fly in all three of the country's first space programs and logged nearly 300 hours in space. Known for his wit and humor, Schirra became a popular CBS News Consultant and co-anchored the Apollo moon landing following his retirement. Decorated with honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, Schirra also contributed to two books in
