Inscription. Halifax Newspapers, such as the Roanoke Advocate and Halifax Minerva, included runaway ads, which usually offered rewards for an escaped slave’s return. Captured fugitives were often held in Halifax Jail and their owners were responsible for expenses incurred by runaways while imprisoned.
