nomination:
William Grose, the son of a farmer who came to Indiana from Dayton, Ohio, began to study law at the age of 22. After serving eight years as postmaster of New Lisbon, Indiana, he was admitted to the bar and moved to New Castle. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1856 and in 1860 won the office of Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. In July, 1861, Grose resigned this post to join the Union Army. Appointed a Colonel in the 36th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry, he saw action in a number of major campaigns and ultimately was commissioned a Major General. After the war he returned to Newcastle and eventually was elected to the State Senate. He had this house constructed in 1870. He also was involved in local charitable work until his death in 1900.
