South Elmwood in Providence in Providence County, Rhode Island — The American Northeast (New England)
Karner Blue Butterfly Project
Conservation Corner
These small, beautiful butterflies help pollinate many fruits, berries, and flowers. They are a federally listed endangered species.
They lay their eggs and their young feed only on the wild lupine plant. (Lupinus perennis)
Due to habitat destruction lupine is disappearing rapidly.
Roger Williams Park Zoo, NH Fish & Game, and US Fish & Wildlife are leading the way in planting wild lupine and restoring habitat in New England.
Now, for the first time since the early 1900s, wild karner blues are flying again in a habitat restoration site in Concord, NH.
