Golden eagles primarily feed on small mammals, as opposed to their cousins the bald eagles who mostly eat fish. Since the pesticide DDT accumulates in the bodies of fish but not mammals, this difference in diet led to different fates for the two eagle populations. While the number of bald eagles in the wild plummeted, the number of gold eagles stayed constant.
